Police Commissioner Martha Harvey and Mayor Tiffany Martin-Hamilton issued an order prioritizing public safety over immigration enforcement. The order is largely a reiteration of the Resolution Affirming Hudson as a Welcoming and Inclusive City, which was passed with a 10-1 Common Council vote in March. After the resolution passed, the police commissioner must issue an Order to put the resolution into practice. The Order includes the introductory text of the Resolution and adds detailed procedures taken directly from the guidelines issued by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman earlier this year.
The Order ensures that people feel safe and included while living, working, and visiting the city of Hudson. The order aims to strengthen public safety by reassuring residents that they can report emergencies and crimes they are witness to or victim of, without fear of reprisal based on their real or perceived immigration status.
